In language-only settings, reasoning traces have improved performance on many tasks, but they require additional compute which adds undesired latency. In multimodal settings, this tradeoff is less clear-cut, for tasks such as image captioning and optical character recognition (OCR), reasoning is often unnecessary and can even be harmful (opens in new tab), while mathematical and scientific problem-solving benefit from multi-step reasoning.
